| Description | Henry acknowledges receiving Sabine’s letter dated 12th October and is ‘gratified’ to learn that Sabine thinks favourably on their ‘efforts “to increase and diffuse knowledge among men”’. Discussion regarding a programme for the [Smithsonian Institute] and satisfying ‘all parties’. Henry notes Mr [Alexander Dallas] Bache and himself wish to establish the institution on a liberal plan and describes this view. Henry has sent their first volume to The Royal Society and requests Sabine to exert his influence on this. Informs Sabine before the magnetic apparatus was unpacked it was lent to Colonel [William Hemsley] Emory of the Mexican boundary commission ‘to be used in the course of his survey’. Reference to the arrival of Newman’s barometer, and two sets of self-registering thermometers from Jones. Henry remarks on his recent visit to Toronto, seeing Captain [Henry] Lefroy and his advice on using instruments., and seeing Captain [William Henry] Smyth. |
