TitleLetter from R Hutton, 'P.P.' to [Edward Sabine]
Date11 June 1848
DescriptionHutton asks Sabine if Sir [John] Herschel has seen a copy of his letter to Mr [William Radcliffe] Birt regarding similar observations recorded at both Kew and Greenwich Observatory. Suggests getting a report from [Francis] Ronalds regarding the work at Kew Observatory, what has been achieved, and the ‘probable cost of reducing the observations’, as well as a proposal from Birt about what he ‘proposes to do and the cost’. Hutton asks Sabine if they should have something from Mr [Charles] Wheatstone as well. Discusses the possibility of preparing a report. Hutton agrees with Sabine that Ronalds and Birt ‘should be called on to point out the advantage’ of continuing observations at Kew Observatory when the observatory at Greenwich had undertaken similar work.
