Title | Letter from Robert Lewis John Ellery, Melbourne Observatory to Edward Sabine |
Date | 27 May 1867 |
Description | Ellery updates Sabine regarding work at the Melbourne Observatory. Ellery thanks Sabine for providing an account of Mr [Albert] Le Sueur. Ellery was anxious with the Le Sueur's new appointment but is now confident that the harmony ‘essential in the making of a government scientific department’ will remain intact. Ellery refers to [Warren] De la Rue’s fears that he may ‘kill himself with work’. Ellery has received the magnetograph and is currently mounting them. Discussion on ordering further instruments. Ellery has sent Mr [Balfour] Stewart a description of an electrograph he has constructed. Professor [Georg von] Neumayer wrote to Ellery regarding a scientific expedition into central Australia. Mr [George Frederic] Verdon is suffering from a throat illness. Ellery is happy to inform Sabine that Verdon has been elected Secretary to the Board of Visitors, but regretfully Professor [William Parkinson Wilson] resigned due to disagreements with other members. |
