TitleLetter from Robert Lewis John Ellery, Melbourne Observatory to Edward Sabine
Date36 October 1867
DescriptionEllery informs Sabine that he may be travelling to England early next spring to regain lost health as advised by medical professionals. The magnetograph is now adjusted and ready to work. Ellery informs everything is in a satisfactory order. Reference to the new and improved magnet room. Ellery updates Sabine regarding his electrograph which continues to work ‘satisfactorily’. Mr [George Frederic] Verdon has accepted the part of colonial agent.

A report, yet to be confirmed, has been circulating in Australia that Dr [Friedrich Wilhelm Ludwig] Leichhardt and 'two other whites’ [sic] have been found among the ‘natures’ on the north coast in Australia. Ellery expresses his incredulity at ‘a man of his energy’ being ‘detained 16 years amongst so miserable a race of savages’ [sic].
