| Description | Regarding the state and future prospects of the Meteorological Society of [Mauritius]. A formal application has been made to William Stevenson, Governor of Mauritius, to establish an observatory on the Island of Mauritius. Meldrum expresses hopes the colonial government will grant the necessary funds. Informs Sabine they are looking for appropriate sites ‘and preparing plans and estimates’ and would appreciate Sabine’s advice regarding these matters. Meldrum fears the inclinometer and magnetometer sent by Sabine will not be put to good use until a new observatory is set up, as the present building is surrounded by ‘stones and magazines’. Discussion regarding the [Meteorological] Society’s aim ‘to collect information regarding the winds and weather in the Indian Ocean’ and their communication with Admiral [Robert] FitzRoy. |
