DescriptionSabine agrees to distribute the results of the Toronto [Observatory]. Requests Sabine to send a set of books to Mr John Walker, Superintendent of City Police Amritsar, Punjab, as desired by his brother James Walker, Kingston's ‘much valued assistant’. Acknowledges the urgency of establishing ‘an efficient system of photographic registration of the magnetic elements’ at Toronto. Discussion regarding the use and construction of various instruments including Brooke’s bifilar and declinometer. Discusses the reasons he has had to rely on eye observations for the smaller instruments. Refers to the ‘long and continued failures caused by want of uniformity in the paper’, and the temperature corrections. Discussion regarding instruments needed, their mounting and expense. Discussion regarding diurnal variations, ‘irregular variations of the temperature’. Kingston acknowledges receiving results from Kew. Includes a list of apparatus and parts ‘required for the self-registering magnetometers at Toronto Observatory.
