TitleLetter from Joseph Henry Kay, Melbourne to Edward Sabine
Date17 July 1869
DescriptionKay sends Sabine ‘a report from the Board of Visitors to the Melbourne Observatory’ which he thinks will interest Sabine as well as show that they are not ‘insensible in this distant part of the world to the claims which scientific pursuits have established upon’ their community. Kay hopes to send an account of the performance of the great Melbourne telescope, describes the mounting of the telescope done in a ‘substantial’ manner and supported by the government [of Australia], and refers to Mr [Adolphus Albert] Le Sueur keeping Sabine updated on the performance of the telescope. Kay recalls the time he was in constant communication with Sabine and remarks on Sabine’s help when he was head of the Hobarton Observatory. Refers to being ‘indebted’ to Mr [George Frederic] Verdon for the [Melbourne] Observatory and informs Sabine that Verdon is currently in London. Refers to Professor [William Parkinson] Wilson as a ‘fast friend of the Observatory’.
