Title | Letter from Erasmus Ommanney, 6 Talbot Square to Edward Sabine |
Date | 9 March 1869 |
Description | During a ‘discussion of the Antarctic papers’ Ommanney drew ‘attention to the fact that nothing has been done by this country towards a memorial’ for James [Clark] Ross. Remarks on Ross’s Antarctic voyage ‘as the great voyage of the century for the interest of science’ and its ‘perilous nature’. Refers to Ross’s achievements, discovering the Antarctic continent, and determining the north magnetic pole. Ommanney has spoken with other notable individuals who concur with his idea and are willing to cooperate. Ommanney shares his idea of a portrait of Ross in the Painted Hall at Greenwich next to Captain [James] Cook’s. Invites Sabine’s cooperation on this matter. |
