Title | Letter from William Lassell, Malta to Edward Sabine |
Date | 23 March 1865 |
Description | Professor [William Parkinson] Wilson informed Lassell the acceptance of his offer of the equatorial [telescope] by the Melbourne Committee was ‘contingent upon the recommendation or advice of The Royal Society’, and since then has not heard anything on the subject. Lassell wrote to Professor Wilson recommending the person chosen to ‘re-erect the telescope should be present at least at its taking down’ among other ‘desirable’ arrangements. Lassell informs Sabine that he must dismount the telescope next month, therefore due to this delay must abandon his ‘gift’ and ‘dispose of the instrument as if no offer had ever been made’. |
