Title'Report of the Committee on the Melbourne Telescope'. Fol ff 6. Signed Lord Rosse, [Thomas Romney] Robinson, Warren de la Rue
Date19 February 1868
DescriptionThe Committee met on 17th February to examine the telescope and found the instrument was not finished by the date agreed in the contract, however they ‘ascertained that the delay arose solely from the unfavourable weather’. After carefully studying the equatorial telescope, the Committee ‘unanimously’ concluded ‘that it is a masterpiece of engineering’. Description of the positive features of the telescope, referring to its movement, clock, power, ‘change of rate, as from sidereal to lunar’ and differential gearing.

The Committee were impressed with the convenience to the observer of the telescope. Refer to the testing of the stability of the tube, testing for any distortion of the image, how they tested the optical power. Discussion regarding the Committee testing the spectroscope on solar and electric spectra. Discussion regarding a photographic apparatus.

The Committee found Mr [Thomas] Grubb has ‘fulfilled his contract and have directed him to’ prepare for the telescopes packing for Melbourne.
