TitleCopy of a letter from Edward Sabine, Burlington House to [Nils Adolf Erik] Nordenskiöld
Date27 May 1868
DescriptionSabine was pleased to receive Nordenskiöld’s letter and shared the good news of his new polar expedition with the ‘British scientific public’. Sabine would have liked to provide a ‘pendulum and its apparatus’ to his ‘instrumental resources’, however due to time constraints they will be unable to complete the apparatus and complete the necessary ‘preliminary experiments’. Sabine remarks if another occasion arises in the future, he would be happy to procure a pendulum for Nordenskiöld. Sabine is preparing an instrument ‘which will take very little room’ for Nordenskiöld. Refers to magnetic observations in different places, ‘continuously self-recording magnetometers’, and refers to ‘magnetic disturbances’. Refers to ‘special methods and apparatus for magnetic surveys by sea’. References [Johann Georg] Forchhammer’s research.
