TitleMemorandum on the question of the molecular construction of vinic alcohol and ether by [Alexander William] Willliamson
Date[1824-1904]
DescriptionReference to the process of ‘ethinification’ dependent on the ‘successful unlocking of many secrets connected with organic chemistry’. Discussion regarding [Joseph Louis] Gay-Lussac, [Baron Jöns Jacob] Berzelius, and [Justus Freiherr von] Liebig’s views on ether and alcohol.

Williamson considers the question of ether, and discusses when sulphuric acid and alcohol are brought together with the result of ether produced from the action, and the molecular composition of the resulting substances. Discussion regarding Williamson’s experiments resulting in compounds. Reference to anhydrous acids, and a paper regarding the ‘constitution of salts and acids’. Williamson refers to six memoirs read to the Royal Society in 1854 regarding ‘types and the doctrine of substitution’.
