Date25 June 1861
DescriptionWilson refers to his diminishing hopes for a ‘large telescope’ in the ‘Southern Hemisphere’. Update regarding physical science and astronomy. Mr [Georg Balthazar] von Neumayer is carrying out a magnetic survey of the ‘colony’ and conducting magnetical and meteorological observations in Melbourne. Update regarding the work of small astronomical observatory. Discussion regarding the establishment and advisory role of the Board of Visitors. Details on the members of the Board [of Visitors], with Wilson as Secretary to the Board.

Reference to Neumayer’s observations conducted over five years, Wilson asks Sabine’s opinion as to what to do with the observations from 1859 and 1860, as the printing of each volume will cost approximately £1000. Discussion regarding the question if hourly magnetical and meteorological observations should continue after 1862.

Wilson informs Sabine of Captain [Joseph Henry] Kay’s happiness ‘at the manner in which’ Sabine referred to his magnetical observations at Hobart Town.
