TitleLetter from [William Parkinson] Wilson, Melbourne University to Edward Sabine
Date24 December 1863
DescriptionRegarding the expense of printing Professor [Georg Balthazar] von Neumayer’s magnetical and meteorological observations taken at Melbourne for the past five years. Reference to a report by the Board of Visitors regarding this subject [see MS/257/5/117]. The government has accepted the Board’s recommendation that The Royal Society and the British Association should decide of the form and extent of the publication, and therefore, Wilson requests the cooperation of the Society.

Professor Neumayer has not completed his magnetic survey of the ‘colony’, and is due to return to Europe for two or three months, and intends to communicate with Sabine.

Discussion regarding the expense exceeding Neumayer’s estimates of printing the observations. Wilson refers to the Board’s desire for the ‘greatest possible benefit to science’, and includes instructions to Mr Childers regarding the publication.

Wilson intends to request the cooperation of the British Association. Mr [Robert] Ellery intends to write to Sabine regarding an order of an anemometer. Reference to the [great Melbourne] telescope.
