Description of a ‘brief history’ of ‘what has taken place’ in the context of commissioning a telescope for Melbourne. Wilson refers to his attempts for many years to persuade the government of Victoria to ‘procure a large reflecting telescope for observing the nebula of the southern hemisphere’. Reference to the actions and decisions made by the Board of Visitors and the communication between The Royal Society. Discussion regarding Mr [William] Lassell’s offer of his large telescope ‘as a present’ to the Melbourne Observatory. reference to the construction of the telescope and the ‘superiority of the mounting proposed by Mr [Thomas] Grubb’.
