TitleLetter from James Thomas Walker, Dehra Doon [Dehradun], to Edward Sabine
Date2 January 1868
DescriptionRegarding the trigonometrical survey during 1866 and 1867, the pendulum operation, and comparisons of observations of the vibration at different pressures. Discussion regarding the temperature of the pendulums. Reference to [George Biddell] Airy’s experiments to determine the relative comparisons of the two pendulums employed in the ‘Harton experiments’ [possibly referring to Harton pit near South Shields] to ‘determine the density of the earth’. Description of Airy’s conclusion of his experiments.

Walker informs Sabine of Herschel’s arrival in India with the instruments given by The Royal Society. Walker hopes to be able to provide Herschel with the ‘necessary assistants and equipment for the observation of the total eclipse’.
