Title | Letter from James Francis Tennant, Ilfracombe to Edward Sabine |
Date | 25 May 1867 |
Description | Tennant has sent Sabine a copy of a letter to the secretary of the Royal Astronomical Society regarding the total eclipse of next year [possible reference to the solar eclipse of 17 August 1868 across the Indian peninsula]. Tennant regretfully informs Sabine that ‘they’ [the Royal Astronomical Society] see the spectrum observations with little value. However, Tennant expresses his relief at the Royal Society sending an eight inch telescope to India for the purpose of spectrum work. On Mr [George Biddell] Airy’s authority, an eclipse of this duration has never been seen before, and it may be a considerably long time before such circumstances take place. Therefore, Tennant argues for the importance of observations of the spectrum of the solar prominence and corona are necessary. |
