TitleLetter from John Welsh, 3 Woodland Terrace, Falmouth to Edward Sabine
Date6 December 1858
DescriptionWelsh expresses his happiness at Sabine’s recovery. Details regarding Welsh’s journey to [Falmouth], including remarks on pleasant ‘railway travelling’, the weather, lodging arrangements, and praise for Mr Fox’s kindness and hospitality. Update regarding Welsh’s health and cough. Description of the weather. Welsh’s only objection to the place is the ‘hilly character of the roads’ due to which his walking exercise will be limited to a patch of level ground. Discussion regarding examination of Mr Fox’s new dip circles. Mr Fox intends to complete his circle to make it an absolute instrument according to Dr [Humphrey] Lloyd’s plan. Welsh suggests a universal instrument for both sea and land observations. Welsh discusses his examination of the azimuthal error of the declinometer before leaving Kew. Discussion regarding the money owed and the state of Jones’s account. [Angelo] Secchi’s dip circle is still at Kew as Welsh had intended to make some observations with it, and therefore left it with Mr [Frederick] Chambers.
