TitleLetter from John Welsh, 3 Woodland Terrace, Falmouth to Edward Sabine
Date7 February 1859
DescriptionMr Fox’s plans to visit Italy have been delayed due to a family tragedy. Fox was due to leave Falmouth and travel to London to meet with the thermometer for [?] and tubes for Mr [John Peter] Gassiot. Discussion regarding ‘the routine of observations at sea’ and Welsh’s suggestions. Welsh notes his lack of knowledge regarding what can be done at sea, and therefore asks Sabine what he considers to be ‘practicable’. Discussion regarding Mr [Frederick] Chambers observations with Sabine’s unifilar compared with the unifilar at Kew. Chambers has also observed using the dip circle and refers to Sabine’s intentions to send the instruments to the Cape [of Good Hope].

Welsh expresses regret at the news of Mrs [Elizabeth Juliana Leeves] Sabine’s ill health and cold, but to glad to hear Sabine’s health is better. Welsh notes Sabine ‘beat’ him at walking, citing two miles a day as his maximum. Welsh informs that his health has not improved since leaving Richmond and ‘suspects’ Mr Fox has been ‘overstating any improvement’. Update regarding Welsh’s health.
