Description | Laing begins with a description of Jenne [in present day Mali], situated on the Niger river, and attaches great importance to it as a place of trade frequented by the Turks. He notes that it is close to Timbuktu. He goes on to write about Mawaneo and the what he has learned of Mahamedi Djuna's journeys, making observations about the nature and habits of the people, as well as agriculture. He makes some remarks about the Joliba River and its size, after which he goes on to describe the inhabitants of Port Lego, the Timmanees, and their manner of dress, weapons, ruler, and marriage ceremonies. He ends by describing the Limba people, who dwell NNE of Port Lego. The remainder of the notes expound further on the groups of native people living in the vicinity of Sierra Leone and on the progress made by explorer Mungo Park. |
