TitleCopy letter from C R [Charles Richard] Weld, the Assistant Secretary of the Royal Society; to C P [Charles Piazzi] Smyth Esq
Date3 March 1848
DescriptionAcknowledges letter from Smyth exonerating Weld given the circumstances. Weld further defends himself in his obligation to distribute the publications of Fellows aboard. States the case of a large number of 'Transactions of the Royal Society of Edinburgh'' recently arrived with foreign addresses but no note from Edinburgh. Weld's clerks spent a lot of time to ensure the appropriate packaging and wrote to the Sectretary of the Edinburgh Society informing of what was done, but received no acknowledgement. As for agreeing to distribute the Edinburgh Observations, on the wishes of the late Professor [Thomas] Henderson, either the Royal Society has agreed to this or not. Explains if this was the case, Smyth would have a letter from the Royal Society confirming this, and the long serving Secretaries have no recollection of this. The late Mr Roberton, Weld's predecessor may have done, but he cannot be asked and there are no traces of the agreement in the books. Informs the matter will be brought to the Royal Society so the misunderstanding can be resolved. [See MS/426/314]
