TitleCopy letter from S H [Samuel Hunter] Christie, Secretary of the Royal Society; to C P [Charles Piazzi] Smyth Esq
Date10 March 1848
DescriptionConcerning the claim of the agreement between the Royal Society and the late [Thomas] Henderson that the Society receive and transmit 60 copies of the Edinburgh Observations to institutes and person who also receive the Greenwich observations, answers an inquiry has found no trace of it. Explains the time in which Smyth refers to, the Society had facilities through the offices of the Government, and if Mr. Roberton set up an arrangement, it was between individuals, not with the Royal Society. These facilities no longer exist and delivery costs are expected to be paid by the one who is forwarding the material. Informs with 'great pleasure' that the Council have decided to forward the copies of the Edinburgh Observatory, on condition that all expenses concerning their distribution be reimbursed and the Assistant Secretary forewarned of the arrival of the next batch. Suggests some volumes be sent directly from Edinburgh to cut down on costs.
