DescriptionReplies to the letter dated 27 June 1849, suggesting, at the joint expense of the Royal Society and the East India Companyy, to publish the Memoirs of Charles Morgan Elliot of the Magnetic Survey of the Islands of the Indian Archipelago. Informs the papers have been published in the first part of the 'Philosopical Transactions' for 1851. Explains that upon hearing of the plans to publish his Memoirs, Elliot applied for furlough and came to Britain at his own expense, here he was able to complete his work in connection with others and better than he would have done in India. Now applying for the 15 months spent in India and the printing of his memoirs in Britain, with the support the President and Council of the Royal Society.
