Description | Acts upon his promise to send an account of the sunsets and afterglow which he witnessed without realising that they were caused by anything abnormal - he would have paid more attention had he known. He was in the Straits of Malacca during the Java eruption. Nothing was noticed apart from a great fluctuation of the barometer and a great rise in temperature. The weather about the Japan and China seas was extremely hot in the summer. The first unsual appearance was in the Red Sea about 11 September when the setting Moon was green. This was shortly after sunset when the sunset glow was still in the sky. The colours near the Moon, through a bank of clouds were yellow, orange and red. Gives extended descriptions of subsequent observations before arriving in England. He concludes with a logged positions in the Indian Ocean and Red Sea where he observed the sunset glow.
