DescriptionLetter from L. Reid who passed through latitudes of straits of India between 26-28 August 1883. He observed very dark clouds; thunder akin to the sound of large guns going off, lasting approximately 2 days; and light sand falling. His calculations estimate he was 600 miles away from land. Sends small portion of dust and piece of pumice stone retrieved from the sea. Reports air pressure changes and the sun's appearance giving the illusion of the earth being on fire.
