TitleExtract from Letter from Lieutenant Leslie R. N, Orient Steamer Chimborazo, to the [Royal Society Krakatoa Committee]
Date1883
DescriptionDescribing the journey back from Australia whilst onboard the Orient Steamer. Observations include passing through large quantities of pumice stone and floating trees, continuing for 2 days, first as dust on water and gradually increasing in size until the stones weighed several pounds each. The ship crew fished out pieces of the stones, noting they were covered in barnacles of around 3 months growth. The prevailing current and changing winds impacted speed of travel from the straits of Java, and also caused the pebbles to move en masse, and resemble a pebble beach. They encountered the thickest stones 1451 miles away from Krakatoa.
