| Description | Journal of Julius Prantz, enclosed to the previous letter [MS 516/8/3] detailing his observations whilst onboard the Barque Hope. Spaning 20 May-8 October 1883.
In May, reports of a sudden squall, heavy thunder, lightning and rain as well as sudden shaking of the boat, speculates a potential earthquake, curious as the ship was 1500 miles away from land. Spotted a smoking volcano in the distance.
The vessel was in Batavia Bay in August, on its way to Singapore, when Prantz observes hearing continuous noises akin to loud guns. Reports variation in noises over the following day and fine ash falling and the air smelling strongly of sulphur. Observed great damage done by the earthquake, including the disappearance of certain islands.
In October, he observes large quantities and varied sizes of pumice stone in the Indian Ocean.
