DescriptionRecalls hearing sounds of detonation in the Sunda Strait whilst onboard HMS Magpie. Observes the weather was unsettled, thick, and hazy, with the barometer noticeably affected. Notes the sun and sky appeared a green hue, followed by oppressive heat. Comments on large quantities of floating pumice stone in the sea, ranging in size, and the neighbouring land being covered in thick yellow green volcanic mud. Describes its devastating effects on the local population and vegetation, as well as the great physical changes in Krakatoa Island itself. Comments on changes to Verlaten Island.
