TitleLetter from 51 Catherine Street, Liverpool, to A. Ramsay, collected by the [Royal Society Krakatoa Committee]
Date16 February 1884
DescriptionConsulted captain of vessel for information and attaches report from the Thoon Kramoom [sic.], which he identifies as the first vessel to arrive in that area post eruption.
Whilst in the Straits of Bauka, on 27-28 August, report hearing loud noises akin to heavy guns at night, and motion in the sea vibrating the vessel. The noises persisted until the following day before ceasing. Did not observe any unusual changes in the sky. Comments on currents and wind in detail. Ashore he recalls mass devastation and wreckage mixed up with stones upheaved from the sea, destroyed trees, and corpses of inhabitants. Encountered immense fields of pumce stone on return journey but none northward. Did not encounter dust or sand on deck at any point.
