AdminHistoryThe International Research Council (1919 -1931) was formed in 1919, as an association to promote international scientific research efforts. It was established by representatives from learned societies and scientific academies from the various Allied powers of the First World War. The Council established a number of international Unions, which were intended to operate independently to promote international collaboration in their specific branches of science. In 1931, the International Research Council was replaced by the International Council of Scientific Unions, which gave the Unions greater representation in the central organisation. Sir Arthur Schuster served as the first secretary of the International Research Council from 1919 until 1928.
