Title`Letter from Louis Bernacchi to A B [Alfred Bray] Kempe
Date15 August 1901
DescriptionWritten from National Liberal club, Whitehall Place, S.W.
Finds he will have to leave London on 13 September by the R.M.S. Cuzco unless the Antarctic Committee are willing to pay his full passage by the P&O 'Oceana' leaving on the 19th or by the Orient liner 'Omrah' on the 27th September. Neither of the above companies will make any reduction with the exception of the orient line in the case of the 'Cuzco'. If he is to go on the 13th he shall not have much time. However, as he will arrive in Melbourne sometime before the 'Discovery' he can continue practice with the pendulums and other instruments at the observatory there. Will Kempe kindly let him know what arrangements have been made for his expenses to Potsdam and in Melbourne awaiting the arrival of the ship? He should like, if possible, to go to Potsdam to see the working of the Eschenhargen instruments not later than the 22nd of this month. He is going to the Isle of Wight on Sunday to see Professor Milne re the seismographic work.
