TitleCopy letter from A B [Alfred Bray] Kempe, 10 Porchester Square, Hyde Park, to [Sir William Huggins] the President [of the Royal Society]
CreatorKempe; Sir; Alfred Bray (1849-1922)
Date6 April 1901
DescriptionConfirms he has received a copies of letters from, and about, Sir Clements Markham, in particular concerning his proposal to abolish the Joint Committee [for the National Antarctic Expedition]. Does not think these letters should be discussed with the Joint Committee until the 'Committee of three' from the Royal Society meets the [Royal Geographical Society's] 'Geographical Committee of three'. Kempe believes Markham did not have the authority to send the letters he wrote, and the Council of the Royal Geographical Society have ordered that the Societies must meet to resolve the dispute rather than agreeing with Markham's personal views. Believes that no action should be taken until this meeting has taken place, and Kempe will write to Sir [Michael] Foster to say the same. Regarding the 'Treasurer's Information', Kempe states that [Edward] Cocks and [Leonard] Darwin both confirmed that Markham told the Royal Geographical Society Council that 'new facts' meant the Joint Committee's instrusctions should be discarded.
