Description | Written from 21 Eccleston Square, S.W. States they are placed in a difficult position with regard to Murray. He has sent Kemp extracts from Scott's Cape letter about Murray. Scott writes from Lythalton even more strongly. Markham feels that the Royal Society officers ought to share the knowledge of Scott's opinion, and of the opinions of all on board, as regards Murray's fitness for his post. Murray has been tried and evidently proved a failure. Markham wishes the extract he encloses to be read by Sir Michael Foster as well as by Kempe.
States Murray goes about as if he had been everything to everybody, as if the whole thing depended on him, and announcing that his is going out in the second ship. With these letters from Scott before Markham, this makes his communications with Murray very, very difficult and embarrassing. Kempe will hear Murray on Monday.
Certainly, in the face of Scott's letters, the idea of Murray going out in the second ship is quite out of the question. Markham thinks the arrangements that Murray is to edit the final results will require re-consideration. But that does not press yet. The thing to consider at once is the disposal of the collections and reports that are on the point of arriving. Note in pencil: Enclosure not found |
