Item 1. Report by Professor Foster re invitation to send delegates to a Cartell meeting of German academies where subject of Antarctic Exploration to be discussed. Sir Clements Markham reports action taken by Royal Geogrpahical Society in approaching the Government on the subject, and read a letter addressed to that Society by Lord Salisbury in October 1897.
Resolved; That this Committee haveing heard the statement of Sir Clements Markham, authorizes the Royal Socity delegates to make known to the Cartell the present position of the matter in England, and to assure the Cartell that a very strong feeling exists in this country that an Antarctic expedition should be carried out as speedily as possible; and further, that the expedition from this country should be planned, so far as is possible, in concert with the proposed expedition from Germany |
