Minutes of previous meeting read and signed

Item 2. Report of Delegates who represented the Council of the Royal Society at the Cartell of German Academies in May read, expressing their sympathy and that of the Royal Geographical Society in cooperating with the proposed German Expedition.

Item 3. Read the reply of 9 June 1898 of the Marquis of Salisbury to the application from the Royal Geographical Society to the Government to assist in the organization of an Antarctic Expedition. States he is unable under existing circumstances to hold out any hope of Her Majesty's Government embarking upon an expedition of this magnitude. Further, having made enquiries as to the attitude of the Australasian Colonies he is infomed that at the recent Conference of Premiers held in Melbourne in March, it was resolved that those Colonies should take no joint action in the matter and the co-operation anticipated by the Society from that quarter will apparently not be afforded by the Colonial governments

Item 4. Sir Clements Markham reported on the action it was proposed to take in Germany and informed the Committee of the readiness of the German Government to co-operate with an English Expedition in dividing the work of exploration.

Resolved to recommend to the Council that the Treasurer be requestd to make an application to the Government Grant Committee for a Grant of £1,000 to be paid in instalments as required, for the purpose of an Antarctic Expedition; and that an application be made to the British Association for a Grant of £1,000 payable, if necessary, in instalments, for the same purpose
