John, and his new wife Margaret arrived at Cape Town on 16 January and the diary continues with John Herschel's astronomical work at Feldhausen Observatory, South Africa, interspersed with observations on botany, geology, natural history, and on his personal and social life at the Cape. Occasional marginal drawings are copies of the originals.
