DescriptionFamily transcription of Sir John Herschel's original diary. The volume describes Herschel's scientific and social life until mid-December 1842, when Herschel is working on chrysotypes, a photographic process he has experimented upon during the year, noting 'Discovered my chrysotype process' on 12 June. He refers to sending his paper on photography to the Royal Society by coach on 14 June. There is a piece of transcribed music and song (2 April 1842) commencing 'Die mutterliebe...'. On 25 September Herschel completes his response to the Chancellor's query on Charles Babbage's difference engine. Occasional marginal drawings are copies of the originals.

With a note on the cover page '1842'.
