Description | Family transcription of Sir John Herschel's original diary. The diary is prefaced by some questions for children on weights and measures. The volume then continues to describe Herschel's scientific and social life. During this period, Herschel works on photography and on his nebulae catalogue. Herschel travels to Dover in late January, to see William Cubitt's great explosion for the South Western Railway works. This long description is supplemented by a marginal note written by William James Herschel, who was also there: 'I saw all this & remember it vividly...' From March, Herschel observes the Great Comet of 1843, initially seen beneath Orion. Occasional marginal drawings are copies of the originals.
With a note on the cover page '1843' and a few pencilled calculations. |
