TitleCopy diary of John Frederick William Herschel, transcribed by Louisa Gordon
Date10 January-31 December 1846 [1909-1910]
DescriptionFamily transcription of Sir John Herschel's original diary. The volume describes Herschel's scientific and social life, the year commencing with Herschel completing the manuscript of his first chapter on the Southern nebulae for printing, on 13 January and taking it to London on 15 January. The diary contains routine meteorological and astronomical observations, including sight of Biela's comet split into two components, from 28 January. On 1 February he notes Sir James South to be 'an unsafe companion...a character which every prudent & honorable man will avoid communion or intercourse with'. Herschel attends the visitation to Greenwich Observatory on 6 June. On 19 June he lends his father's [William Herschel's} telescope eyepieces to Mr and Mrs [William Rutter] Dawes for examination. Occasional marginal drawings are copies of the originals.
