Description | Family transcription of Sir John Herschel's original diary. The volume describes Herschel's scientific and social life, concentrating on the latter during this year. It commences with Herschel attending the National School for the purpose of 'prosecuting Parker a man caught by Crick stealing coals at the school house'. Herschel attends the Royal Society Club, Royal Society and Astronomical Society in mid-February, presenting a bust of Francis Baily on behalf of Miss Baily. In March, he has special jury service at Maidstone. Generally, Herschel notes dinner parties, visits and other socialising, in addition to the usual meteorological and astronomical observations. On 4 October he notes that 'Babbage shewed us the Daguerrotype process'.
With a note on the cover page '1849'. |
