DescriptionFamily transcription of Sir John Herschel's original diary. The volume commences with sketches of geological features, the Lion's Head at Cape Town and 'Innesberg' [Johannesburg?]. The diary continues to describe events, including John Herschel's astronomical work at Feldhausen Observatory, South Africa, interspersed with observations on botany, geology, natural history, and on his personal and social life at the Cape. Occasional marginal drawings are copies of the originals. Some annotations, corrections and comments from the time of the transcription.

With a cover sheet 'Diary 1835' and the endorsement in red ink 'all compared W.J.H. & L.G.' The cover has a brief listing of key events covered within the diary year, notably Herschel's observations of Encke's Comet and Halley's Comet.

The manuscript has an end-note, 'Finished comparison 19 July 1909'
