Description | Family transcription of Sir John Herschel's original diary. The volume describes Herschel's scientific and social life until 17 December 1839, with concluding notes on the planting of specimens from South Africa and a summary list of key dates in Herschel's experiments in photography. Photographic researches appear throughout the year, together with astronomical observations. Herschel visits France in May and he notes service on Royal Society committees. By December, he reports on the destruction of his father's [William Herschel's] great telescope. 'Godwin & two men came and commenced pulling down the 40-feet reflector - a task not unaccompanied by with danger owing to the rotten state of ever part...' With a note on the cover page '1839'. |
