Description | Family transcription of Sir John Herschel's original diary. The volume commences on 9 January and is reasonably complete until late June 1840, at which point entries become very brief, mainly noting visitors to Hawkhurst. The earlier section notes that the Herschels' house in Slough is to be taken by Mr and Mrs Grover and from late January, John Herschel is planning the purchase of his later home of Collingwood House, near Hawkhurst in Kent. Some notes on experiments in photography (including a paper to the Royal Society) and astronomical observations. Occasional marginal drawings are copies of the originals.
With a note on the cover page '1840'. |
