TitleLetter from J T [James Thomson] Bottomley, Netherhall, Largs, Ayrshire, to [Joseph] Larmor
CreatorBottomley; James Thomson (1845-1926); Irish physicist
Date17 May [1908]
DescriptionAn intimate friend of Lord Kelvin's, W.J. Barber-Starkey, is up for ballot at the Athenaeum and Bottomley asks for Larmor's influence. Lady Kelvin requests this too, as Lord Kelvin's death made a great difference to Barber-Starkey. He is a country gentleman from Shropshire, of considerable ability, and worthy of being elected. Bottomley is almost sure that the daguerreotype of Lord Kelvin is from 1855. It is certainly a good deal previous to March 1857 and must be later than 1854. It is difficult to get the exact time with perfect certainty, but he thinks 1855. It would be almost safe to say 'about' in the title. He was delighted to hear of the Obituary Notice being in print.
