TitleLetter from W R [William Robert] Bousfield, St. Swithins, Hendon, to 'Dear Professor' [Joseph Larmor]
CreatorBousfield; William Robert (1854-1943); British lawyer and physical chemist
Date17 January 1911
DescriptionHe has ordered wires of pure platinum, gold, silver, copper and platinum silver alloy from Johnson Matthey. He started four hours ago on platinum wire, giving wire thickness and current, and stating the resistance. 'The thermoid effect or extra resistance due to current is exactly proportional to the square of current strength, that is to the heat developed in the wire'. He is clear that this has nothing to do with a particular alloy, but is universal. He hopes to send a brief paper for the Proceedings.
