TitleLetter from M [Marcel] Brillouin, Collège de France, to 'Dear Sir' [Joseph Larmor]
CreatorBrillouin; Louis Marcel (1854-1946); French physicist and mathematician
Date20 October 1920
DescriptionThanking his correspondent for sending Maxwell's volume on mechanics, since he was unaware of its existence. It was a pleasure to look at the beautiful photographic frontispiece. It was during his third year of school that he read the two volumes of Maxwell's Treatise on Magnetism; and in 1879 his admirable small treatise on heat, and later his articles in the Encyclopaedia Britannica. He has often regretted Maxwell's early death and that he had not lived to see the complete triumph of his brilliant views, nor was able to follow them up himself.
