TitleLetter from A B [Alfred Barnard] Basset, Chapel Place Mansion, 322 Oxford Street, to [Joseph] Larmor
CreatorBasset; Alfred Barnard (1854-1930); British mathematician
Date28 February 1887
DescriptionAsks for Larmor's opinion on a note by Thomson and Tail about the rotation of a liquid spheroid. Basset has found that spheroids are stable, rather than unstable, when the spheroid is very ablate. He encloses a sheet [MS/603/1/62] which should be read in conjunction with p.261 of his Proceedings of the London Mathermatical Society paper of June 1886. On one other matter, he cannot follow Rauth's argument with reference to energy test of stability, explaining why, with reference to Riemann.
