| Description | Larmor's letter illustrates the present imperfect state of refereeing. The greater portion of the paper sent by Basset to Larmor was read at the London Mathematical Society on 14 December 1893 and the referees, one of whom he suspects was Love, sent in a report containing a number of ridiculous remarks about the third method of stability, which has never previously been called into question. Basset will retire from the L.M.S. Council next November and the Society will lose the £500 he has intended to present on his retirement had he been elected President in 1894. 'M.M.'s election [Percy Alexander MacMahon] has cost about the same as an M.P.'s. He must see the accounts before they are circulated to members, as he is legally responsible. |
