Title | Portrait of a young man [claimed as Sir Isaac Newton], by Burnet Reading (1776-1822), after Sir Peter Lely (1618-1680) |
Date | 1799 |
Description | Half-length portrait of a young man with long hair, wearing an academic gown, his hands resting on a globe. Inscribed below: "SIR ISAAC NEWTON, when Bachelor of Arts in Trinity College, Cambridge. Engraved by Bt. Reading from a Head painted by Sir Peter Lely in the possession of the Right Honorable Lord Viscount Cremorne".
A spurious portrait, "If an oil existed it could not have been a portrait of Newton, and is most unlikely to have been painted by Lely...". Discussed by Keynes, XXXVIII-1. |
