Description | 160 35mm slides of coloured illustrations of the fundus (back of the eye encompassing the retina, macula, optic disc, fovea and blood vessels) by Arthur William Head prepared under the direction of George Lindsay Johnssn. Showing the eyes of different species of mammals observed with an ophthalmoscope and reproduced at 16x magnification, for papers by Lindsay Johnson. A selection of the illustrations were published in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society in 1901 and 1968.
Slides are accompanied by a typed, numbered list of the species of mammal depicted, giving the scientific and common name and the date of publication in Philosophical Transactions. The numbering of this list corresponds to the numbering of the original artwork in MS/697/1. An attached note dated 11 February 1972 from W G Evans to L. Townsend of the Royal Society library, requests that they be deposited in the archive along with an offprint of the 1968 paper which is also present. Also includes an additional offprint of the plates from the 1968 paper without the accompanying text, and two transparencies (125 x 99 mm) depicting 1) the fundus of the urangutan, 2) the fundus of an albino European.
The original artwork for figures/slides 1-9 is not present in the archive so the 35mm slides and offprints represent the only copies in the collection. Figures/slides 1 (fair-haired European) and 5 (gorilla) were not published. |
